Congratulations, Dr Julian Thompson!
On Tuesday, 23 July, Pastor Julian Thompson, a Biblical and Pastoral Studies lecturer at Newbold College of Higher Education, was conferred with a Doctorate in Theology from the University of Oxford. This remarkable milestone marked the culmination of a profound journey ignited by the guidance of his MA supervisor at Newbold, Dr Aulikki Nahkola.
Thompson received a full scholarship from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and initially worked with Professor John Barton, the former Oriel and Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture, before continuing under Professor Katherine Southwood of St John's College. His work explored how ethnographic studies can be used to better understand texts such as Judges 5 and Exodus 15.
His thesis was examined viva voce by Revd Canon Professor Susan Gillingham of Oxford University and Professor Jaqueline Vayntrub of Yale University. Dr Thompson's research not only highlighted the need for greater diversity in biblical studies but also showed how actively embracing diversity in terms of 'nation, kindred, and tongue' enriches our study of the Bible.
